January Arts: theatre, wine & style

With Christmas over, this time of year can all feel like a bit of an anticlimax. But, here are four good value-for-money events on The Artful Diner radar for January…

The House of Bernarda Alba at the Almeida Theatre

One of Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca’s best known works, The House of Bernarda Alba is relocated to Iran for the Almeida’s next play, which opens on Thursday 19 January. Adapted by Emily Mann and directed by Bijan Sheibani (who recently directed Arnold Wesker’s The Kitchen at The National Theatre), the play stars Shohreh Aghdashloo as repressive matriarch Bernarda Alba. Expect to see suppressed sexuality, jealousy and frustration in this tale, originally set in rural Spain, which focuses on a mother’s tyranny over her five unmarried daughters.

Meet the curator of Style and Subversion at the V&A

If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit the V&A’s postmodernism exhibition [see picture, above], which ends on 15 January, there is a last-minute chance to do so and meet its curator, Glenn Adamson on 12 January. He will be hosting a dinner about the exhibition in the Giovanniroom at Quaglino’s restaurant. Tickets cost £40 for a three-course meal with wine and glass of champagne and include a ticket to the exhibition, which ends three days later on 15 January.
